In the heart of the Mexican highlands sits a small village of 35 families. Corralejo de Abajo is situated on the rocky hillside next to a river in a beautiful arroyo. They have a small church, a tiny store, a two-room elementary school for their young children and a deep love for their community and their families. They have little else. Transportation is a 40 minute overland walk to the nearest paved road which is then a 45 minute ride by bus to the largest neighboring town, San Miguel de Allende. 14 years ago they received electricity but until a group of North Americans helped they had no well. All their water was gathered from a hole dug along side the river and then carried in 5 gallon buckets up the rocky hillside path to their homes. They are proud people who work very hard to maintain there community and families but they have little extra money. It is nearly impossible to "get ahead" when you are poor in Mexico. They feed and clothe their children but there was not enough left for the total expense of a well. Two years ago I began the "Well Project" to help these villagers obtain clean water . The Mexican government paid 80 percent of the cost. The villagers part was $20,000 US. With the help of money sent by friends, neighbors and strangers in the United States money was raised and the well is complete. However the villagers still have a debt of $3,500 to pay. They have already exhausted their resources raising almost $7,000 themselves from their friends and families in Mexico and the USA. The project is complete yet they still have this debt. Consider a gift to a worthy cause. Relieving them of their debt will allow them to have extra money for things like medical care and education. If you would like to contribute to a cause where 100% of your money is going directly to the people in need please consider a generous donation. Through the help of St. Georges Episcopal Church in Austin your donation is tax deductible.
